What is A Class A Drug?
In the UK, you can incur a fine or prison sentence for possession, distribution and production of illegal substances. Class A drugs are considered to be the most harmful to the human body, and it’s for this reason that these substances carry with them the most serious punishments.
What kind of drugs are considered Class A?
There are a plethora of drugs that have been classified as Class A substances, some of which were once legal in the UK.
Heroin: an opioid and painkiller that’s used recreationally to make the user feel a sense of euphoria. One of the most addictive substances in the world, heroin is responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths each year.
Cocaine: this drug can be snorted, smoked or injected, and is a stimulant. Taking cocaine can put immense pressure on the heart, and is highly addictive. Cocaine is the second most frequently used illegal drug globally, after cannabis.
Ecstasy (MDMA): popular among nightclubbers, this drug comes in the form of tiny crystals or pills, and causes the user to feel a sense of elation and energy. However, there are a variety of adverse effects including increased heart rate and anxiety.
LSD: full name Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), a psychedelic drug that’s known widely for its psychological effects. Users may experience hallucinations and altered awareness of their surroundings. It has been known for LSD to trigger panic attacks and/or acute psychosis.
Other types of Class A drugs include, but are not limited to, amphetamines, methadone and magic mushrooms.
What is the sentence for possession of Class A drugs?
The punishment for Class A drug offences depends on a variety of factors, including whether or not this is your first offence or if you have a history of substance abuse. As a guide, the punishments for Class A drug offences are as follows:
