COVID-19 Fraud – Furlough Grant

Recent news articles have high-lighted cases of Furlough Grant fraud with HMRC starting to prosecute alleged offenders.

Bearing in mind the millions of claims being made for grants and loans under the Government-backed Covid-19 support scheme, it is very likely that some claims will be deemed suspicious.

HMRC have stated that while at present all claims for grants will be paid without checks being made, they will verify at a later date that all claims made are valid.

Payments made due to minor errors will have to be repaid, normally without penalty but if HMRC suspect payment was made due to fraud they will institute legal proceedings which could result in a fine and/or a prison sentence.

If HMRC suspects you of making a fraudulent claim it is important that you urgently seek legal help.
